We’re in Rhodes and have been evacuated due to the wildfires.

We’re safe in a hotel which has been turned into a temporary refuge.

By all accounts, 30,000+ tourists and locals have been displaced in the last 24 hours and let me tell you, it’s been fucken scary.

We went from our hotel being turned into a refuge to jumping on the back of a dump truck in the middle of the night, to walking for hours in pitch black to finally getting picked up by a coach to take us to where we are now.

Update: we made it to the airport. It might be a long wait to get on a flight, but we’re in a hell of a better place than before

@andy really glad you're safe. My holiday has just been cancelled so we are rebooking in the UK.

Hope the whole family is doing ok, gives me nightmares just thinking what my two would think if this happened to them

@steveworkman yeh it was really tough on the kids. You definitely dont want to be out there

@andy @steveworkman Have you made it back? Poor kids, yeah I bet it was so scary, as well as physically hard for you all, esp. being uprooted in the middle of the night.

We have our first ever resort holiday as a family booked with our two littles in Turkey in September - I'll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled on the weather & fire conditions, as it's about the same heat level there as in Greece right now.

@sarajw @steveworkman not yet, but later this week!

We’re actually really near Turkey in Rhodes. If it helps with anxiety, it’s looking like these wildfires are arson. Turkey are super well equipped for wildfires too, whereas Greece isn’t

@andy @steveworkman Yeah I did go looking up maps and saw that it was pretty close to where we'll be going. Ahaha I dunno if that helps the anxiety!

I'm still so sorry you've had to go through all that.

@sarajw @andy If it helps, we only cancelled because the place we were going to in Rhodes was pretty close by, and with the wrong winds we'd be right in its path. We were offered free cancellation and took it.

If it were just me and my partner we would probably still go - but no need to risk it with the kids and we had an easy way out. Turkey will be absolutely fine

@steveworkman @sarajw the fires have spread even further now too. The whole south east of the island is essentially out of bounds

@andy @steveworkman I'll still be keeping my ear close to the ground. Whether arson or climate, anything can happen in the meantime.

It's our first ever resort/all inclusive sort of place with the kids, until now we've only ever visited family in the countries where they live, which are rather less hot places (usually)!

@sarajw @steveworkman the kids will love all inclusive, that’s for sure
@andy @steveworkman I'm hoping we can boot them into the kids club for an afternoon or two and just... sit. lol. Maybe enjoy a cocktail.
@andy are you still in the airport, or have another place to stay? You got somewhere OK to sleep?
@sarajw yeh we’ve been put up in a hotel near the airport for a couple of nights and I’ve got us an Airbnb for Tuesday before our flight on Wednesday
@andy Ah good - I hope you manage a couple of enjoyable days before you head home!
