Bastian AllgeierThe leader of the German conservatives introduced the idea to collaborate with the far right AfD yesterday. He knows that he won’t get kicked out or replaced as the party leader. He will paddle back a bit after some backlash and that’s it. It doesn’t matter that he just meant on a community level either. The idea to collaborate with Nazis is now officially speakable without consequences. I feel sick!!
If you’ve read all about the downfall of the Weimarer Republic and the rise of the Third Reich and you’ve witnessed all the damage of WW2 in the world and you still reenact history as a power play, I actually think you are worse than the original Steigbügelhalter (stirr up holders)

@bastianallgeier yeah I remember learning about the Weimar Republic in school. A society becoming liberal and accepting seems to mean nothing and it can all fall back to fascism in an instant. It's painful to watch the world sleepwalking back into it.

@bastianallgeier I still like to think we are actually trending progressive still - but that the people in power and their (ageing boomer, largely? I hope?) voter base are stuck in some kind of fantasy version of history, that they're currently digging their claws in to keep.
I guess the danger is that they can convince enough of the younger generations that they are right.

I worry about the authoritarian tilt that we're seeing in the young leftists here in the USA especially in relation to climate change.
They feel that democracy has let them down instead of doing the hard work of learning how the fossil fuel industry undermined our democracy, but hopefully during upcoming elections they can be convinced to turn out to vote and we'll make some progress.

Lot of the people voting for True Finns in Finland in the last election were young voters. The far right has a great presence in the social media, especially TikTok. It’s not only boomers, I’m afraid…
