My game launched today.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2293660/He_Fucked_The_Girl_Out_of_Me/

It took a lot of pain to get to this point. My worst fear is that it will be met with a wave of hatred or silence.

Steam's algorithm due to the nature of this game will likely work against it being seen.

Please boost if you can.

Site Error

For context due to the nature of steam's adult tag and the use of the word fuck, it's going to be targeted towards games made for erotic consumption.

There isn't really a place for adult games that exist for things other than gratification on steam.

In an ideal world there would be a place for both games that discuss or explore trauma and sexuality- and a place for games designed to gratify the viewer.

Unfortunately right now that doesnt exist so my game is pushed towards people seeking porn.

Then when it isn't positively received because there are basically zero sexy elements, it goes into obscurity.

It's not steams fault or erotic games fault that it is that way. It is more the nature of our society that anything "adult" is treated as porn.

I hope one day we can live in a better society where people can explore sexuality and trauma openly in games and have a space beyond just porn.

I don't think we are there yet or even have the language for it but I hope to see the world where that exists.

This game is free and will always be free.

If you are interested in playing it outside of steam, it is available on itch.io as well at:

You can play it there in a web browser without needing to download anything for those of you who do not use steam.

Thank you for taking the time to read this thread.

@taylormccue Thank you for your bravery and hard work, I can't imagine how many hoops you had to jump through to release this on Steam.

PS: Very happy to see you here on Fedi   You are awesome

@endali Steam was really cool about some things and easy going and then on others it was super tough.

There was hoop jumping but it wasn't as bad as some other game things I've had to do before.

Also I am glad to be here.

I use twitter since it's got a lot of intertia but my hope is the fediverse wins out.

@taylormccue me too, people are really so much more human here. Reminds me of old web in the way, with all its pros and cons.

It's not as easy to get a bigger following on here, but it feels like the ones that follow interact a lot more and feel like actual human beings than just numbers ❤️ Plus it's easy to create a lil queer bubble on fedi made of mutuals and the stuff they boost.

PS again: I've played HFTGOOM recently for the first time and I cannot understate how much of an impact your game had on me. It's been an experience which will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for sharing your memories, they brought out some of my own which I hid deep inside of me.

@endali I agree that it doesn't have as big of follower accounts but the people here really do feel more human.

I think part of it is that the people who use mastodon are choosing the less comfortable to use social network that is kinda better than huge corporate ones.

But O_O

I am glad you played through HFTGOOM and that you found value in it. I get what you mean by memories and I hope you're okay. Normally I'd have something more profound to say but im just exhausted.

@endali But I'm glad it helped. I really hope you're okay and just thank you.
@taylormccue thank you so much as well again    I hope you are doing better now and are in a good place
@taylormccue as someone working on a game exploring sexuality and trauma, and VERY reluctant to publish it on steam for the reasons you cited, I'd love to have your feedbacks on this steam release if you don't mind
@taylormccue THIS is also one of the reason I'm weary. If you click the link without being logged in, you get some kind of error page. It doesn't even tell you about a 18+ game, it just vaguely tells you to login without explanation. This is awful.
@Pierrec @taylormccue And it doesn’t open in the steam app either 😒 so I can’t easily check it out or save it for later or something

@h5e @Pierrec

I think I replied earlier to this but my memory is hazy.

It is also available on itch for free and is the same game.

https://taylormccue.itch.io/trauma

But be warned the game is 18+ and has extensive trigger warnings.

@taylormccue @Pierrec Yes I saw it in the thread! At least helped me get a picture. I bookmarked it on mastodon, that makes it the most likely for me to come across it again when I’m at a computer.
@h5e @taylormccue you should play it! It's great!
@Pierrec @taylormccue Yes that’s the idea 😅

@h5e @Pierrec https://taylormccue.itch.io/trauma

The game is available on itch but I can get you steam keys if either of you would like them.

@Pierrec I am exhausted and post launch doing the thanking and social mediaing but I can actually let you know in dms or have a chat with you about how it went.

Steam is both really chill and good about some things and super tough about others.

It's kinda mixed and itch is my favorite place to be but this launch actually went really good.

@taylormccue Considering it's not available in my country (Germany) this helps.
@taylormccue book marked for later play .

@MishaVanMollusq Thank you so much.

Just as a warning, the game is 18+ and has an extensive list of trigger warnings so please take care before playing it.

@taylormccue it’s gonna be a week or two …in migraine Prodrome this morning and it’s gonna be a bumpy week.
Maybe first week of august…?
@taylormccue I'll check it out later once I get on the pc😉

@EnaWasHere Thank you so much.

Just as a warning, the game is 18+ and has a huge list of trigger warnings so please take care when playing it.

@taylormccue I hope games will soon evolve into an art form where it's acceptable to tell stories that are difficult and true, as well as for fantastic escapism. Books have always been able to do it, graphic novels got there eventually, and this looks to me like the leading edge of a similar revolution in gaming.

@witchthimble I really really hope so.

I think the problem is with a few companies having so much control over distribution it will take a while since this stuff exists at their whims.

@taylormccue I can see your point that it's not steam's fault, but I do think it's something they're responsible for fixing
@genderfaerie @taylormccue what would you call that category of game?

@EndlessMason @taylormccue hm!
It's a good question. I think you can call it anything so long as you're going to support and promote the category, teach people what it's for

Some options could be: traumatic experience, autobiography, grown-up games, introspective maybe?

@genderfaerie @taylormccue i guess there might be someone responsible for curating this stuff at valve who could contribute more to this than a random factory defaults tech bro like myself.
