Why didn't Elon just start his own social network. Surely that would be cheaper than buying an established one and eviscerating it down to what's essentially a beta for something else.

Twitter is being rebranded as X

X.com now points to following repeated tweets about it by Twitter owner Elon Musk early Sunday morning alluding to the fact, while also calling for a new logo design.

@germ Why?
1) Because the entities which funded his acquisition had a different objective in mind than starting up a social network;
2) Because using X instead of Twitter not only destroys the old brand but makes it a lot harder to use a dead bird to mock him...or so he may think.
