How book-banning campaigns have changed the lives and education of librarians – they now need to learn how to plan for safety and legally protect themselves

Librarians are defending the rights of readers and writers in the battle raging across the US over censorship, book challenges and book bans. That conflict has even changed how librarians are trained.

"Among librarians I have yet to find a surly or unhelpful individual: I think librarians will inherit the earth." (Wallace Stegner in "Beyond The Hundreth Meridian")

@docht Well I need to read this book! #Librarians

@docht @TheConversationUS Not all, unfortunately. The librarian in this stupid racist illiterate town is beyond unwelcoming and unhelpful, far into rude. She hates anyone browsing the shelves and definitely doesn't allow sitting and reading. Not that I would read their 20-yo Christian romances or books by Trump and his acolytes

High on my list for where I move is one or more real libraries :-)

@3x10to8mps @TheConversationUS I'm sorry to read about your experience. The librarians I met in my life so far where always helpful, dedicated and cutting edge.

@docht @TheConversationUS Oh thank you!

I agree they mostly are amazing smart helpful resources. When I explored my way across the US back in 1998, the first thing I did in each town I stayed in was to get a library card so I could learn about the place and access web resources. It gives me happy memories when I see them now

But unfortunately not all libraries are welcoming or interested in giving people real information. Sad but true
