Curious about the demographic of fedi: Which of these regions are you on?
[Original question was "What continent are you on?" but that has some issues]

(Ordered alphabetically in case you're wondering)

Please boost if appropriate, I want to reach as many users as possible.

Oceania is defined as in https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania - it is not a continent, but instead a geographic region consisting primarily of Australia and New Zealand. I had to collapse those into one to avoid needing more than 8 options.

Africa
0.7%
Antarctica
0.4%
Asia
4.4%
Europe
51%
North America
33.6%
Oceania
6.3%
South America
3%
[Not a major continent]
0.6%
Poll ended at .
Keep in mind that timezones heavily skew early results.
@TudbuT everyone that picked Europe should be asleep (me)
@elexia SHHHHHHHHHHHH i dont wanna
@TudbuT I came back to check exactly because of this. Refreshed and Europe and Oceania bumped up a little.
@TudbuT Also the lack of boosting, per all other toots.
@TudbuT 2% south americans , mi gente latino✊
@TudbuT Shade for Australia and Zealandia in the last item? also most of the pacific islands are not on what we'd call a continent
@ellenor2000 @TudbuT iunno, ive seen it get grouped with oceania before, might just be including islands that are reasonably far away from shore

hehe silly string
@TudbuT Australia and NZ really should be their own items, they're continents too. Rjjrtjtjy oh well
@lynn i was pretty sure only 8 poll items would be reliably displayed on all clients, so I had to collapse those into one. :/ not sure if this is actually the case however.
@TudbuT oh I see! That sucks.
@TudbuT umm, but why have Antarctica? There are only a few research bases there and no permanent population(I think), I'm not even sure there is anyone there now, since it's winter there
@ciubix8513 mostly because it would be really fun if there was someone on fedi there. Ill admit it was a bit silly to put there.
Continent - Wikipedia

@downey yeah, i had looked at that already and decided 7 + 1 (for the not included regions) fits delightfully within the 8 option limit. thats basically all there is to it XD
How many continents are there?

YouTube

@TudbuT
> Ill admit [Antarctica] was a bit silly to put there

Maybe not, given that 1% of those who responded to your poll claim to be there...

@ciubix8513

@TudbuT @ciubix8513 I was weirdly looking forward to someone being there WHILE thinking - yeah nah mate - there shouldn't be anyone there 🤔 😂
@TudbuT I have always assumed it was Europe but I am very curious to see if that is actually the case
@TudbuT can I list Antarctica if I have claims or do I actually have to be there 😆
@Lachee if youve ever been there thats special enough imo
@TudbuT I'd love to visit but I oppose tourism to the continent. Maybe I can cosy up to a researcher hehehehe
@Lachee great stance! sorry about it being so serious, i usually post much less seriously, but im like legit really curious where fedi lives xd
@TudbuT Whoa incredibly few of us in Asia!
@agasramirez keep in mind timezones since its been much less than 24h since this was posted. i think its relatively early in asia right now, right?
@agasramirez @TudbuT

I think its because the poll is in english

I think this
server map might give a better idea of where people are in the fediverse
@TudbuT In real life, or in my heart? ☺️
(my heart is rooting for the poles… #SaveThePlanet)
@TudbuT @timbray Do another but ask where folk are FROM (born). Should also be really interesting.
@leoncowle ooooh, good idea. Will do that *later* however, because otherwise i fill up too many timelines and it gets annoying, so I will first wait for this post to die down.
@leoncowle @TudbuT @timbray do one asking where people are from "originally" 🫣

What kind of Asian are you?

@TudbuT what continent do you think is Oceania? Do you mean Australia?

I'm in Aotearoa New Zealand which is on the microcontinent Zealandia
https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/Continent/

Continent

A continent is one of Earth’s seven main divisions of land. The continents are, from largest to smallest: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.

@Kay i know Oceania is not technically a continent, but I often hear it being used to refer to both New Zealand and Australia.

@TudbuT You've left out Australia.

Oceania is not a continent.

@weezmgk i know, but as ive pointed out in other replies, to my knowledge 8 items is the maximum on a poll in some clients, and so i collapsed New Zealand and Australia into one (and when this is done, it is often referred to as oceania)

wikipedia describes it as a "geographical region that is described as a continent in some parts of the world".

@TudbuT thanks for that, but I think Wikipedia is misinformed.
@TudbuT @lisamelton Australia is a continent…

@bgrinter I explain my reasoning in this post

not the most ideal solution of course, but yeah.

LGBTQIA+ Tech Mastodon
@TudbuT sorry, I was scrolling down on my phone and accidentally clicked Africa on this poll. Don't want to mess up your results.
@meltingrobot oh no worries, it doesn't really affect the results too much considering the amount of voters, so dont worry about it :P

@TudbuT the initial set of results after 3 hours show an underlying problem with Mastodon. with 72% of the votes coming from North America, there just isn't enough content relevant to other regions being generated.

so far, therefore, Mastodon simply remains nothing more than a curiosity. i do hope that the rest of the world catches up in short order, though.

@buldielocks well, this is probably due at least in part to time zones. it only becomes conclusive after 24 hours.
@TudbuT I get that you said Oceania so as not to leave NZ and the other Pacific islands out. Thank you 😊
@Notsailingalone very glad to get some positive feedback on this as well now. ive gotten quite a few slightly annoyed messages from aussies asking why I didn't just write australia (tho i do understand their point of course) XD
Thank you!
@TudbuT That's Aussies for ya, used to being a recognised continent and not being left off maps. 😆
@TudbuT @DocCarms whee, I follow people here on every continent except Antarctica! I win!

@TudbuT 40-something Aussie here. When we were schooled, Australia was its own Continent. Oceania was a region because much of it wasn’t on the same tectonic plate as Australia.

It’s been argued ad nauseam online whether AU or Oceania is a continent, and if north and south Americas are one or two continents.
Usually those debates are started by people farming engagement on other social media formats.
Interesting chat here in the replies though! 👍

[edit - also read your comments on other AU/NZ replies. You make sense. We just like to be vocal about these things 😁]

@TudbuT

Most Antarctica residents swim north for the winter 🐧🐧🐧

@TudbuT Need to include North America on the continent of Rhode Island
@TudbuT I'm just here to find out who clicked Antarctica, if they're being honest and if I can follow them.

AFAIK they staff the research stations all year. I think I've read about 6 month stints, getting half the winter each, but cannot confirm.
@KneeNeart @TudbuT https://brr.fyi is a good Antarctica blog to follow if you don’t already!

Let me know if you find out!
