Curious about the demographic of fedi: Which of these regions are you on?
[Original question was "What continent are you on?" but that has some issues]

(Ordered alphabetically in case you're wondering)

Please boost if appropriate, I want to reach as many users as possible.

Oceania is defined as in https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania - it is not a continent, but instead a geographic region consisting primarily of Australia and New Zealand. I had to collapse those into one to avoid needing more than 8 options.

@lynn i was pretty sure only 8 poll items would be reliably displayed on all clients, so I had to collapse those into one. :/ not sure if this is actually the case however.

@TudbuT umm, but why have Antarctica? There are only a few research bases there and no permanent population(I think), I'm not even sure there is anyone there now, since it's winter there

@weezmgk i know, but as ive pointed out in other replies, to my knowledge 8 items is the maximum on a poll in some clients, and so i collapsed New Zealand and Australia into one (and when this is done, it is often referred to as oceania)

wikipedia describes it as a "geographical region that is described as a continent in some parts of the world".

@TudbuT the initial set of results after 3 hours show an underlying problem with Mastodon. with 72% of the votes coming from North America, there just isn't enough content relevant to other regions being generated.

so far, therefore, Mastodon simply remains nothing more than a curiosity. i do hope that the rest of the world catches up in short order, though.

@TudbuT 40-something Aussie here. When we were schooled, Australia was its own Continent. Oceania was a region because much of it wasn’t on the same tectonic plate as Australia.

It’s been argued ad nauseam online whether AU or Oceania is a continent, and if north and south Americas are one or two continents.
Usually those debates are started by people farming engagement on other social media formats.
Interesting chat here in the replies though! 👍

AFAIK they staff the research stations all year. I think I've read about 6 month stints, getting half the winter each, but cannot confirm.
