anyone know a good source on early internet aesthetics? especially one that mentions culture jamming?
taking the fedi lit request machine for another spin. this time... anyone know something good on ~macros~? #softwarestudies

@akstuhl Not a computer science academic, but if I were looking for good background on this I would just make my start here:

Note the sudden connection back to Peirce!

Homoiconicity - Wikipedia

@akstuhl Oh wait, you most likely meant 'image macros' didn't you? But then delving into the history of the word 'macro' in relation to technology would likely help to understand how meme culture began to generate aesthetic material so prolifically
@attentive no you had it right initially -- and homoiconicity is new to me + exactly what I needed to see, thanks so much! the specific macros I'm writing about were properties of an early PC radio automation program, where carts (virtual tape cartridges) generally contained audio but others could contain custom instructions for meta-control.
@akstuhl Awesome, I'm glad it's a useful jumping off point Andy. A concept I particularly love, one that is literally generative (or syntactically, as it were 🙃)
