Norway has had it with Meta, threatens $100K fines for data violations

"It is so clear that this is illegal," Norwegian regulator said.

@arstechnica Each and every country in the whole wide world should sue #meta and maybe then Zuckerberg gets what he deserves ...

@arstechnica 36 million annually to a company making billions is just a business expense.

Live the idea, but fines can't be flat if you want them to really work.

@pixelpusher220 @arstechnica Fines are just one thing a DPA can impose on companies.

The article also speaks about a „temporary ban“. The DPA could also ban the apps or the website. And as all Data Protection Authorities in the EU (and EEA for Norway) are supposed to align their decisions with each other that ban could spread to all EU countries. And THAT will hurt Meta much more than a fine.

@pixelpusher220
Well.. if the rest of Europe joins in and issues daily fees of $100k-1m, it will for sure make a difference.
@arstechnica
@cmyrland @arstechnica at $30 mil a year by 40 countries is still not that much to a company with profits 10x that. It's something but not scaling. $10k per day * days adds up fast.

@arstechnica 100K? Thats chump change, and just a "cost of business".

It will be ignored until it matters to the bottom line, measurably.

@arstechnica Users have rights. All of our web or mobile movements must not be used for commercial purposes by #META or any major company. By the way, I'm in #Lisbon #Portugal #Europe with no access to #Threads .
@arstechnica it would be more impressive if they fined them a week's worth of revenue not pennies.
@arstechnica
$100k fine to Meta is not a serious fine
@arstechnica well I like the #fmeta hashtag better than the #meta hashtag but maybe that’s just me
@arstechnica norway needs to bring back the death penalty fo rmark zuckerbarg
@arstechnica so Threads not coming to the EU?
@arstechnica how the United States allows this company to harvest this kind of personal data just to sell them ads isn’t that surprising considering it’s a country that allows corporations to buy their elected officials.

@arstechnica
When "regular" people commit crimes, they go to jail and for offenses that impact far fewer people and are far less severe.

We need jail time for execs and we need it yesterday.
