Young Americans blame SCOTUS, GOP for unforgiven student loan debt - Lemmy.world

Young Americans are piling the blame for their student debt balances on conservatives, according to a poll by Generation Lab provided exclusively to Axios.

As they should

Yep. Congress gave the U.S. Secretary of Education the right to do it. But the terrorist party and their illegitimate puppets in SCOTUS decided that, no, a Constitutional law passed by Congress was not valid because... reasons. Can't let those "libs" ever enact something that is popular, fair, legal, and beneficial...

So yes, everyone should blame SCOTUS and the GOP because they are solely responsible for putting us all in this horrible position.

Low education take... Learn how the constiution works and spending power.

Also... If your beloved party wanted to do this... Why did they not do so when they controlled both house and presidency?

Asking for a friend.

Hey dipshit why don’t you explain it then?

You mouthbreather fucks talk big then never actually put forth anything of substance just “nuh uh you’re wrong”

“Low education take”

-Someone with loads of education

Constitution vests spending power with Congress of the US. When Biden decided to use executive power to what is essentially exercise in spending, he over stepped constitution. When it was drafted, he knew it and he was briefed on it by white house counsel, they still decided to proceed. Maybe he really wanted to do something but it was limp dick attempt... but the base won't question that, fine. What about congress not doing anything? They could have do it, they had the people and the authority to do so.
The senate was a 50/50 split for under 2 years. With 2 “democrats” barely willing to do anything. I fact one of them isn’t even a Democrat anymore. All of this during peak pandemic. Of course this would have had a chance if any one of those limp dick Republicans could for once do something that doesn’t just help the rich and enslave the poor.
Congress passed a law authorizing the secretary of education to forgive debts. They willingly ceded it.
Do you even know why it was overturned? Only the state of missouri challenged it as they were the only ones with proof of being affected. Turns out, MOHELA the federal loan servicer for Missouri didnt even file a suit when they would be the only ones affected. There was no standing for any state and the whole decision is based on absolute bullshit. This whole decision reeks stupid of partisan bullshit.
The decision is the supreme court essentially using a potemkin case to rewrite the law. Couldn’t even find a real plaintiff to use to stab college debtors in the back.

It was always a bit of a stretch to have this work. I think Biden understood that there were two ways this could go. One possibility was that if his plan passed muster, a lot of young people saved money and wee happy and would credit that directly to Biden. And if it got shot down (particularly if the SCOTUS did it), he knew the blame for that would go to Republicans. He wins either way.

I happen to think decreasing the debt load on students is a good idea, because there’s no way they can establish themselves if they have crushing debt when they start. But let’s make no mistake about it, Biden is using the Federal Treasury to buy votes. It’s been done before. I’m old enough to remember that George W Bush did a lot of vote buying, in the form of “tax rebate” checks directly to taxpayers. I think I bought a dryer with one of mine.
