I don't think it's meant as lecturing though.
It's similar to moving into a new house or flat: your neighbors show you around how things work, that are new and what their use is, what's different to your old "Home" + maybe why.
I never felt "lectured" by grumpy "superiors" at any point here in the #Fediverse. Yet, I think, it's nice to be introduced and kindly explained what's different from where 
-users came from.
