I’ve watched a couple of films in local IMAX before (Inception, Monsters vs Aliens, Megamind, Doctor Strange) and I didn’t think it was all that superior to just normal cinema. That’s why I’m not that enthused when a new movie has that option.

I remember back then when Interstellar was released here on IMAX, and it was a really good-looking film. Maybe because that was actually projected on IMAX film format. I noticed the dimmer projection when I saw another Nolan’s film Dunkirk on IMAX, and since then it went downhill.

interesting. i did not make that connection. first thing that came to mind are the usual entrance arcs in the public cemeteries.
and if the commenter is indeed referring to the daily artwork, ‘trivialize’ is the last word i would associate with it.

It’s not my place to say how people should receive this, but at the same time, I don’t think “trivializing” is the right word either.

Kinda reminds me of when someone said that just because a protest (Reddit blackout) doesn’t work, doesn’t mean it failed, and that person brought up Tiananmen and La Liga Filipina as examples. The commenters then interpreted it as the blackout being placed at the same level as those who were massacred, when that wasn’t the point being made at all.

This painting was made in 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic. Filipino laborers were being forced (or have no choice but) to come to work without the option of WFH or the luxuries others have. Some of them are also being executed for violating quarantine when purchasing essentials and not having the benefit of Grab or deliveries.

In some ways, it also ties into their other concerns like income inequality and capitalism being bad, as someone mentioned already.

It’s not making a 1:1 comparison to Auschwitz (I think that goes without saying - it’s a catastrophically reprehensible event without equal), but merely using the imagery around it as inspiration.

There’s also memes. Memes are arguably more likely to trivialize issues even if it was not the intent. I was surprised to learn when a friend talked about a stuff toy their kid wanted. They were not familiar with the character/s until I gathered from their description that the kid wanted countryballs merch.

But what’s alarming is that the kid seemed like they enjoyed memes around Nazi Germany and Russia as if they’re Saturday morning cartoon anti-heroes.

Hello! If you’re referring to the posted artwork, let me offer some context. The people depicted are Filipino low-income laborers.

The art can be read as saying, “Capitalists are the new Nazi.” With what’s going on in the world, I don’t think it’s a trivial statement. It’s a warning.

Nabasa ko yung handkerchief stained with Rizal’s blood nilabhan nung masipag na maid. I find it crazier that there are 10 handkerchiefs with blood that exist out there because apparently each sibling has one. I try not to be weirded out by what could be considered as objects of history. I mean, it is blood. You can learn a lot with the blood. If you could even extract DNA from it, wow, right?

Natandaan ko tuloy yung time na umiyak ako tapos binigay ni friend yung handkerchief niya sakin to wipe my tears. After that nag joke siya hindi niya na lalabhan and i-cherish niya daw. Ako naman sanay na sa mga ganyang statements so sabi ko bahala siya, I guess, as a joke too?

I did offer labhan ko na din kaso sabi niya wag na. Gusto ko din labhan kasi syempre may sipon rin yun no huhuhu. I tried na tears only kaso wala ih, nabasa ko talaga siya 😅 iyakin mode was on.

And the laba thought has lead me to thinking of ricci guy na isang taon daw hindi naglaba. I guess they have a break up feud right now. I definitely think he started it with the stupid statements. He definitely should have just shut it, now he just looks like a clout-chasing asshat not even reflecting sa mga pinagagawa niya.

Imagine being well-known tapos ex mo ganyan. Definitely yikes. And somewhere out there, may girl pa din na papatol sa kanya kahit alam niya na ang mga bagay-bagay.

And they say people are rational beings. I don’t know about that. Knowing when to quit is also essential to survival, ok.

Felt disappointed na hindi ako invited sa wedding nung isang high school tropa ko. Madami rin namang ibang hindi invited sa barkada namin pero akala ko talaga isa ako sa pinaka close friend niya. Bakit kaya? wala naman ako maalalang ibang kinasama ng loob niya sakin aside from nagsuntukan kami nung 3rd year HS dahil nilalandi ko sa text yung GF niya nun. Fly paper then i-tape mo 'yung edges sa surface. Kung mabilis si bubwit at hindi dumidikit sa trap, maglagay ka ng obstacle/s sa path papunta sa trap to slow it down.

Do you guys think this country will eventually have a high capacity (let’s say that can hold 70-80k people) outdoor stadium in the near future? I became interested in this topic because of Taylor Swift and Coldplay’s world tour as they perform in outdoor stadiums and it then occurred to me that we actually don’t have a high capacity outdoor stadium here (though I guess it makes sense as Filipinos typically aren’t into outdoor sports so I guess the investment for a high capacity stadium probably isn’t worth it).

It’s a possibility, yes, but logistics would be a nightmare if not planned properly (see Philippine Arena). Another factor will be return of investment; you wouldn’t be building such large stadium if the events are too far from between.

We can and should. Kita naman with these k-pop concerts na sold out kadalasan and madami pa gusto manood, pano pa kaya when the big guns come over.

Problem is logistics. The only plausible locations for these venues are in far away patches of land like Bulacan, Clark, Laguna, etc. and getting there as a concertgoer and going back home after (if you’re from the opposite side of the country) is a pain.
