For a talk, I updated the remaining carbon budget figure from The Global Carbon Budget based on a recent publication from Piers Forster and colleagues.

If CO₂ emissions continue like 2022, on January 2024, we'll have 5.25 years to use up the remaining carbon budget for 1.5°C.

Also, by any fair measure, whether it's by population or legacy CO₂ emissions, it's not the rich countries who should get to use the remaining carbon budget. We need to be at real zero CO₂ emission now.
@davidho fairness is no longer a viable measure there. Fairness was on the table 15 years ago — we decided to be unfair. Since we cannot shut down our CO₂ emitting infrastructure instantly (we cannot, people would riot, and the ensuing civil war would make matters worse), we can only work to enable others to get to our level of welfare while skipping the intermediate CO₂ emitting stage.
