An account of hackers and hacktivism during the Kosovo war. Absolutely fascinating piece of tech history that I knew nothing about. Via @realhackhistory https://chaos.social/@realhackhistory/110723217013753518 #tech

I've been writing this blog entry for weeks now it is, from all that I've seen online, the most accessible and complete account of #hackers and #hacktivism during the '98 - '99 Kosovo War. I discuss the #history, the #hacking groups and their tactics. This may have been the first true international #hacker #cyberwar. #histodons https://realhackhistory.org/2023/07/16/first-international-hacktivist-cyberwar-online-conflict-the-kosovo-war/

@laurens Thank you! I came across a lot of articles when looking through a US newspaper archive for news on hackers from 1999 and just kept digging, it is fascinating because it was like a template for conflicts that came after.
@laurens @realhackhistory if you count information warfare then the Zapatistas did it before, in 1994.
@Kaker @laurens Absolutely, and the Chinese hackers and Indonesia in 1998, there are plenty of other examples but the Kosovo War was the first example of hackers attacking a country and then hackers from that country striking back on any kind of large scale that I could find.
