If you want some suggestions on what it might resemble, it immediately brought to mind the microscopic grain structures of certain alloys, especially if you turn it to grayscale. When you use etching, polarized light and tinting to enhance the grains, you can get images that looks reminiscent of this colored image. Here's an example I found.
