Controversial take

Don't screw in your nvme ssds

they're strong independent silicon that dont need no screws 😎

@Mizokaya Controversial hot-take: 2.5" format sucks, use passive adapters to turn them into 3.5" with the properly aligned screws so they can fit in any disk array or shelf you may have.
@lispi314 I don't think that'd work for laptops tho...
@Mizokaya Yeah laptops are just awful in a large number of ways unfortunately.
@lispi314 every problem has a compromised solution in many ways, if you want a portable device unfortunately you have to keep the size down... well atleast in modern machines 😂 lets not talk about those 10 kg "portable" pcs

@Mizokaya I actually legitimately prefer the #PortableComputer form-factor, they're repairable, upgradable, use standard parts (laptops fail that on most accounts other than the drives and RAM these days) and maintainable.

My main case for mobility is emergencies, so having to wheel-along a pelican case knockoff is acceptable (bike trailers are great on the go, as are racks on the back).

@lispi314 True.... but A: 99% of consumers would not build themselves a custom mobile pc w/ screen and keyboard... and B: that solution is equally if not more compromising in other ways, that effect more people.

I think laptops absolutely have no reason to be as unupgradeable as they are (Framework is proving that) but I don't think they'd be as popular as they are if they didnt serve a very useful purpose very well with fewer compromises etc.

@Mizokaya I'm curious how Framework will solve the additional PCIe cards problem (which they did mention interest in on an LTT video) without essentially coming up with an add-on case that'd make it very similar to some portable computers.

GPUs for example tend to be pretty huge these days and even SFF ones just won't fit in an average laptop.

Of course that'd still leave the CPU & memory with the usual cooling problems of laptops (and all the custom ducts, heat pipe assembly & fans).

@lispi314 I think at some stage you just have to accept that certain parts wont be easily replaceable or swappable, and acknowledge that as the tradeoff for the *ease* and form factor of portability they offer.

@Mizokaya I guess so.

I guess I prefer maintanability & power over ease/convenience.
