X: We need your team to report their weekly metrics so we know if the project is on track.

Me: All the team's work has an estimated delivery date. Extra work on metrics wouldn't change anything.

X: But, how do you know they'll meet those dates?

Me: Because historical data shows they are very reliable. You can trust those dates. If anything were to cause that date to change, it won't be because of their metrics.

@malcolm X: I am trying to make you see that my problem is your problem. My KPI is delivering continous reports to whoever, and I cannot spend any time on really understanding your project metrics.

@peppe You're quite on the ball!

What appeared to be "generally helpful guidance" was actually just a way for them to meet their own goals! I don't think they were expecting to be challenged like that 😅

The first hint something was funny is that it skipped the first and most important step of "What's the real problem?"

@malcolm unfortunately we've been all down that road 😎 I wonder when HR steps in and asks you about whether you're gonna make those KPI's this year? Carry on! Clarity can not be explained to foggy minds.
