I said 5 years ago when the teachers' strikes began, but we're at the crest of the biggest wave of labor organizing since WWII, and owners & execs can feel however the fuck they need to feel, but it's happening. The pop culture moment of actors joining in today will make this real to millions more who don't pay as close attention, but who do see what happens to stars they know.
@anildash yes, the gods of Olympus are joining the fight
@anildash UPS drivers are poised to strike this year too (friend of mine is one, they’re already practicing) which people will feel pretty quickly when their online orders stop arriving.
@anildash I think the opportunity for white collar unions is huge right now. Just look at UPS’s negotiations. Delivery driver isn’t a white collar job, but one of their positions definitely relates to white collar work, and that is the use of cameras in trucks. Employee surveillance is at an all time high in white collar work too. Regardless of whether workers feel safe and/or fairly compensated, they should have say in whether and how they are being watched.
@anildash people who hate unions should just ask nypd or teamsters if they'd ever abolish theirs & then wonder why all workers shouldn't have the same protections
@anildash there’s been a big push by grad students at my institution to recertify our grad student union (after Scott Walker and Act 10) to fight for better wages and other things. Definitely some interesting stuff going on!
@anildash Yeah, it's a really crucial time. People are about to feel it in two places that have felt untouchable for a while now -- the shows they watch and their online package orders. The labor that goes into both, and the extent of the inequality in those industries, deserve the spotlight they're about to get. I'm excited.
@ianrosewrites @anildash it’s kind of mind-blowing that it’s possible that a pack of alcohol swabs is delivered from China to my doorstep for $1.20. I can’t even get a cab to the city for $1.20. Some things aren’t adding up.
@anildash It seems like one way people who will be affected by workers in a broad array of vital industries going on strike in rapid succession would be to do what they can now to make themselves a little more self-sufficient. I'm not sure what that looks like, but stocking up on essentials now might be a good start. But not hoarding! We're gonna have to work together to get through this and come out stronger.

@anildash @adr I really want this to be true.

But…

@anildash It is sad that employers don't want to work with employees to create a great work environment. It is sad employees had to form unions that have costed everyone money, cause the employer raises the prices on product once a settlement is reached and the little guys pays for the settlement. Not the stockholder.
Unions serve a purpose, but it is time to bring in mediation from the very beginning to resolve disputes and prevent employees from striking.
@anildash The great power of labor unions is revealed when they team up. The Teamsters used to be the queen of the chessboard back in the day. When a union couldn't make much headway in a strike, the Teamsters would join them. That would do it. Suddenly, your business is stopped. You cannot move product in, out, or anywhere. Scabs do you no good if you physically can't move product.
@anildash
I sincerely hope you are right. The labor movement helped right our ship before, hopefully it will again.
