I joined SAG in 1959, a member for 64 years.

In 1960, Ronald Reagan led the call for an actor’s strike. He riled up a meeting at the Hollywood Palladium shouting β€œStrike, strike, strike!”

I voted for the actors’ strike authorization this June and support the WGA.

We're in solidarity.

@georgetakei geez, George, next time you choose a role model, pick one that didn't ignore the HIV/AIDS epidemic for nearly a decade, directly contributing to millions of deaths of gay men. and that's not even to mention a presidency rife with corruption, crime, and - yeah - union-busting.

sheesh...

@brooklynman I read no holding Reagan as a role model in @georgetakei’s comment, only the fact that Reagan was president of the SAG in 1960.
@blitzen @georgetakei then you don't understand the reverent voice, what it is to speak with reverence of a person for an act they committed and what they represented in that moment, bestowing respect upon them for the deed in doing so. it's a concept in rhetoric, in pubic speaking, and why celebrities and people with an audience should chose their words with care.
@blitzen @georgetakei for such a public figure in the LGBTQ+ community as Takei to openly praise Regan in such a way, considering Regan's openly antagonistic and detrimental history with the LGBTQ+ community during his presidency, is, at best, sloppy, and at worst, reckless.
@brooklynman @georgetakei what praise? He simply stated a fact, that Reagan (in his role as SAG president) called for a strike in 1960.
@blitzen @georgetakei I've already explained it in detail.
@brooklynman @georgetakei your explanation rests on things Takei *should have* said, and I do agree those things need to be said of Reagan, but the post contained no β€œopen praise.”

@blitzen @georgetakei it doesn't, actually, as i stated several times that it's about what Takei *should not have said*.

And just because you fail to see something (or refuse to acknowledge it) doesn't mean it's not there.

@brooklynman @georgetakei I do not subscribe to such a rigid black-and-white view of the world.
@blitzen @georgetakei like I said:just because you fail to see something (or refuse to acknowledge it) doesn't mean it's not there.
@brooklynman @georgetakei Conversely, just because you believe something doesn’t inherently make it so.
@blitzen @georgetakei proclaiming your blindness doesn’t place you in a position to tell others what they can see.
@brooklynman @blitzen @georgetakei Not praising. Possibly however pointing out to the GOP that their hero was in favour of unions.... once.
@brooklynman @georgetakei I don't think George was mentioning a role model, rather some historical background

@brooklynman this is closer to how i understood Takei's purport: underscoring the hypocrisy of a public figure who supported unions to his own advantage, only to turn around and denigrate them for political gain. someone not anchored in any enduring principles.

AT-AT Assault :verifiedtrans: (@[email protected])

@georgetakei Figures a fucking Republican would enjoy the benefits of a strike for himself, and then deny another union their right to strike 20 years later.

@RubyTuesdayDONO what I see in Takei’s words is highlighting the good thing Reagan did, while you’re *inferring* a negative which simply isn’t there. This is why it had to be stated by another.
@brooklynman
i understand. i humbly beg to submit that my inference is not unfounded: knowing Takei's perspective, i find it entirely implausible that he holds Reagan in high regard. however we might agree that this invocation of Reagan can be perplexing without considering the missing context, since that the hypocrisy is not explicitly denounced.
@brooklynman
perhaps it's an appeal for Reagan supporters to support SAG-AFTRA like Reagan once did. i wouldn't have made the same choice to invoke him here. but i appreciate the opportunity to lean about this history. part of me is impishly looking forward to (explicitly) confronting Reagan cultists in my community with his hypocrisy 😈
@RubyTuesdayDONO I doubt that this is an appeal to Reganites. I've followed Takei for a long time. I belive this is simply a case of him being careless.
@RubyTuesdayDONO I’m not saying that he holds Regan in high regard-- as I mentioned in an earlier reply, I believe his words were sloppy and that he should speak with more care. There's no need to have mentioned Regan at all.
@brooklynman hmm, that makes sense … i wonder in hindsight if i was trying too hard to make "4-dimensional chess" out of it, when Occam's razor offers other mundane-but-likely possibilities. thank you for sharing your perspective!
