French aristocrats fetishized the peasantry and held cultlike balls dressed in elaborate tailor-made cosplay-like outfits just before the Revolution after which most of them rightly lost everything including their heads. The “artisans” who enabled this wretched behavior didn’t go unnoticed and unpunished either. Many of them died with their “patrons”.
