Residual (entertainment industry) - Wikipedia

@yuki2501 @ElleGray wait so writers are not getting paid for reruns and stream releases of their stuff? How's that even legal?
@chickfilla @yuki2501 the streaming services don't pay. I don't know how it's legal, but big business in the states seems to be allowed to do whatever it wants. The writers have to fight for it themselves
@chickfilla @yuki2501 @ElleGray The studios have had creative accountants for a long long time. They can make most mildly popular movies look like they are losing money. Princess Bride being a good example. It's become a cult classic yet the studios don't let that follow on money hit the books for residuals. The unions really need the right to audit. It's the reason Scarlett Johansson was so bent out of shape when Black Widow was released on Disney only. She got pd because she made a fuss public
@barryzee @yuki2501 @ElleGray Jesus, that's just fucking evil. Also isn't the IRS supposed to crack down on shit like that? Like, this doesn't seem like a Hollywood exclusive thing
@chickfilla @yuki2501 @ElleGray So, the IRS only looks at the tax returns of the studios. How they distributes the residuals never hits except as a gross business expense. As with most corporations, there are enough loopholes to owe little or no taxes. Since those are private, the actors and writers would never see what they are reporting to the IRS. That's why they need the right to audit. I am guessing that the studios would give them a lot of other stuff to avoid giving them that.
@yuki2501 @ElleGray I was just wondering what does this mean : ) precious info, thnx #residual
