Stepping outside my comfort zone once again. My daughter got a skateboard on her b-day so I figured that we will learn to skate together. Learning skating at 39, that doesn’t sound crazy… right? Making some progress here 💪💪. #skateboarding #inspiration

@virious Not crazy at all! I was 44 when I started.

I found this guy's tutorial to be really helpful when getting started. Enjoy! #skateboarding

How To Skateboard For Adults Tutorial

YouTube
@feijoa this is exactly the same video I’ve seen 😄, so I guess I’m on the right track 💪. I need to buy protection pads for my knees and elbows, right now I’m super scared of falling.
@virious Absolutely, pad up. I've taken loads of falls, and it's saved me from some serious injuries.
@feijoa you had lots of falls even without trying to do tricks, just from learning how to ride it?
@virious I ride a surfskate, so do lots of carving. Turn too fast, and you end up on your wrist. I also do a lot of transition skating down at the local skatepark, and now learning to drop in, which has resulted in some big falls. Though I had a nasty accident just pushing in a straight line. It's no different to skiing or snowboarding - falls are inevitable.
@feijoa ok, so today I will go shopping for pads 👍
@virious @feijoa definitely pad up if you are worried about falling. It's those slow speed falls coming straight down that are killer IMO. I'm 43 getting back into it and I wear a helmet, wristguards, knee pads, elbow pads, a compression knee brace, and an ankle brace.
@smokindank5280 @feijoa you have a solid armor while skating. Hopefuly today I will have my pads too. I would never suspect that falling down while riding slow speed could be more dangerous than on higher speeds 😮
@virious @smokindank5280 100% I keep telling my kids not to stand on a stationary skateboard - that's when it's least stable.
