To Ease Global Warming, the Whitest of Paints

Scientists at Purdue have created a white paint that, when applied, can reduce the surface temperature on a roof and cool the building beneath it.

This is obviously false, but what I would like to know is how this ultra-white paint compares against regular white paint that's available now for painting impermeable roofs and lowering indoor temperatures, and what happens when dust gets on the roofs?

@davidho Dunno.... "between 1% and 2% of the earth's surface" is a LOT of surface.

2% translates to roughly 10,200,000 million **square** km.
Compare that to 7,692,024 square km, which is the size of the entirety of Australia.

I've actually looked into this where I live... they make a kind of white silicone paint that does this. But what they don't tell you is that it doesn't work on many types of roofing materials, and can actually damage them. Basically, it works best on tile-free roofs.

@davidho From what I can tell, it's not just the paint's whiteness, but also the quality, thickness, and non-pourous nature of the surface itself. That's why there are already products like this, which, btw, should be easier to clean occasionally, to remove dust.

I read of a project they did on homes and mobile homes in one FL city to coat all the roofs like this, only to discover that the variable expansion and contraction of the tile after the coating was applied damaged the tiles.

@davidho White painted roofs with water collection are normal in Bermuda…
@davidho maintenance for dust control. Periodical hosing down, if rain@isn’t doughy I clear the surface
