What is the difference between Lemmy and kbin?

What is the difference between Lemmy and kbin? - Lemmy.world

I’m not sure I completely understand the differences. Are they seperate or somehow connected? Also I’ve read you can view kbin instances on Lemmy somehow. How does that work if they’re two different things? I’m using Liftoff is it somehow possible to view kbin instances on there?

They’re what is called federated. They use the same protocols which allow each to see the other. The best comparison I’ve heard to describe it is like how you can read emails irrespective if someone used Google Mail, Yahoo Mail, or Microsoft Outlook.

Do you mean that their API’s are similar or the same? That’s why they can interconnect?

Not APIs, they use the same communication protocol. Like email does, or like websevers do with HTTP (HyperText Transport Protocol).
