Threads has been down for me like this since last night. I'm in Italy. I can't view my profile, notifications, or post. But I can read my timeline.

Maybe they figured out a way to block some parts of the app in Europe? 🤷‍♂️

@viticci Same here - that’d be a bummer. I really hope they don’t proactively take any measures to keep European users away who, by jumping through quite some hoops, opted in the hard way.

@jens Even while risking asking something completely stupid or missing the obvious point here: Why bother? I mean, didn't we learn the hard way (going down the T_____r route) to stay away from offerings by those big commercial entities just recently? It feels ... a bit like begging for the same trouble yet once more...😶 I have yet to see Mastodon or the Fediverse geoblock users for whichever reason... .

@viticci

@z428 @viticci I have few problems with big commercial entities, but a lot with antisemites and right-wing conspiracy theorists. Neither Zuckerberg nor Musk are altruists, but only one of them fits into the aforementioned category.
@jens Hmmm, not sure, the last time I've been there, I noticed Facebook also has quite its own share of serious problems with said crowd of people. And I've learnt to know quite a bunch over here who left Facebook for the Fediverse years ago for the same reasons. But maybe it's just very individual, not sure...
@viticci
@z428 @viticci Don't get me wrong: I understand those fleeing the major services, since every big network has to deal with all kinds of horrible people. In the end, the big players more or less mirror society, from wonderful human beings to absolute assholes. Looking for a public square, the difference between Zuckerberg and Musk is that the latter actively supports the worst.

@jens Yeah, I get that. 🙂 But my point was more, like: We _know_ there are, there always have been reasons to escape these services, and there have been reasons to stay (most likely network effect). For _new_ services like Bluesky or Threads, though, this doesn't seem to count especially while active on the Fediverse already...? So I wonder why not just call it the quits for these platforms, stay over here and this way also actively support something that could turn out to be a "better" or more "ethical" means of social networking? I mean, currently Threads is becoming a "public square" not by incident but only because people are rushing to get there as fast as somewhat possible, even trying to circumvent means of access control blamed to or caused by privacy regulations (which would probably be a good thing)? Isn't that all about making a platform big again that doesn't necessarily have to be big...?

@viticci

@z428 @viticci Those are valid thoughts. I guess people are just looking for different things, and they are willing to make tradeoffs correspondingly. "Better" means something else to everyone, and there's no network that satisfies it all – each one comes with an individual culture (and size) that might be inviting fore some and repulsive to others.
