Daring Fireball
@daringfireball cite for beer as popular as ever?? Slate had a good piece a couple of weeks ago which makes me wonder if they had advance intel it fits this narrative so well. The rebrand was moronic but I don’t think their beer was as popular as ever in other markets. Indeed, I’d guess that Fieldwork and Fort Point have been eating their market share here too
@daringfireball Hard for me to read “Sapporo” as anything other than the city. Maybe because the company is called “Sapporo Breweries”. Maybe because I’ve lived there and don’t like my city’s name to be hijacked.
@daringfireball Nowhere near as long-lasting or iconic, but Austin had a brewery started by Pierre Celis, who had been the brewmaster for Hoegaarden. It started as an independent but was acquired by Miller. It could not be run profitably enough for Miller so they shut it down. Rights to the name drifted around, but years later, Pierre’s daughter (Pierre himself had died in the meantime) got hold of them and started brewing here again. Sadly not using the same old copper kettles that had been imported from Belgium.
