Wow.

Via Kyle Cheney:

! #DOJ is appealing the sentences imposed by Judge Mehta against the #OathKeepers convicted of seditious conspiracy or obstruction, including the 18-year term for Stewart Rhodes.

All of the sentences, even Rhodes’, were well below what the sentencing guidelines called for.

Appeals have so far been noticed for:

-Stewart Rhodes
-Jessica Watkins
-Roberto Minuta
-Kenneth Harrelson
-Kelly Meggs
-Joseph Hackett #legal

More likely to hit the docket

2/ Via Andrew Weissmann:

This is very surprising; appeals of sentences by the govt are rare.

Note: not a lot of political skin to lose by bringing this appeal.

@GottaLaff

Just to make sure: they are appealing the shortness of the the sentences, right? They are looking to make sure they all get longer sentences. Right?

@kbsez @GottaLaff

Correct.

Justice Department to challenge length of prison sentences for Rhodes and other Oath Keepers

The Justice Department is appealing the 18-year-prison sentence handed down to Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. It is also challenging other far-right extremists' punishments that were shorter than what prosecutors had sought. While Rhodes received a lengthy sentence for seditious conspiracy and other convictions, the 18-year term was below the recommended range under federal guidelines. It was also less than the 25 years the Justice Department had asked for in one of the most serious cases to go to trial in the Capitol attack. Rhodes’ attorney called the government’s decision to appeal “surprising.”

@GottaLaff

Mehta (an Obama appointee) has consistently given J6 putchists sentences on the low end. Weirdly, not one republican has complained about this "democrat judge" being "soft on crime." Imagine that.

Maybe I'm just starved for any sign at all the DOJ is treating the J6 putsch with the level seriousness that it deserves, but this is the best news I've heard in a long, long time. Finally, actual public action indicating that DOJ understands J6 is not a business as usual crime.

@GottaLaff Mehta has reduced sentences or found perps not guilty in all cases before him. Not sure what is up with this Obama appointee.
@GottaLaff
We all have witnessed this and it goes back all the way from Popadopoluos.
