I am finally getting around to watching *Girlfriend, Girlfriend*. It's a pretty run of the mill #HaremAnime. I'd put it somewhere around the first season of Quintessential Quintuplets but with a cast that feels like they're acting the age they're depicted.

The elephant in the room is that, pretty much from the word go, they're
#poly. The characters have never heard of #polyamory. They make a lot of mistakes; dumb assumptions; and have ideas that will set off a mix of red flags and cringey memories for actual poly folx. But there's a boy who is in a sorta functional relationship with a girl who then is confessed to by another girl but is so insecure that he can't reject an advance. He pitches that he date both of them openly since he doesn't want to lie, cheat, or hurt feelings. New girl says she doesn't want the existing couple to break up because they are a good couple and she likes that first GF makes him happy, #compersion.

Unfortunately, it's mostly just a setup for normal harem
#anime stuff. Introducing a third girl who wants in to the relationship happened way too early. There was a lot of interesting potential hinted at that they just kinda sped through to establish it as a status quo for third girl to shake up.

I'm on the fence about whether I'm glad or frustrated that they don't use words like throuple, triad, compersion, envy, and jealousy. Yes, this would be an unhealthy example to model a relationship on. But it's a comedy where everyone is dumb in their own way on top of everyone having an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex. You aren't supposed to model your relationship on them but learning accurate terminology could still help some young people trying to understand what's going on in their head and heart.

At the end of the day though, it's probably a good thing that it got made, adapted, and dubbed. The mangaka, Hiroyuki, is monogamous and clearly didn't consult with poly folx on the project. His stated motivation was to tell an "unrealistic" story where nobody has to have their heart broken when the protag chooses one partner. Not great but someone with clout in the industry was able to use that clout to open the door. Hopefully in the future we'll get a show written by someone who knows unicorn hunters outnumber unicorns 50-to-1
😅
While I'm all warmed up from that rant, I want to mention a few other anime series that make poly noises.

*High School D×D* is the ur-example of wish fulfillment harem anime. At some point it strayed from that because it got so caught up in developing lore and eventually develops a holy grail war because shut up. But it's still so good at what it is that it's pointless to compete with. Why am I bringing it up? There's an episode, I think in season 2, all about the #1 lady, Rias, feeling conflicted over protag, Issei, spending less time with her. It resolves with an honest discussion about jealousy and new relationship energy. I'm sure it's a familiar conversation even if the circumstances are different.

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom actually uses the word polyamory in its dub. It shouldn't. It's 100% patriarchal polygyny in service of political machinations. The show starts okay but once you realize the protagonist is unironically citing Machiavelli as a positive example, lots of stuff snaps in to place.

Cat Planet Cuties will always hold a special place in my heart for a few lines from the penultimate episode. There's three characters vying for Kio's affection. Manami makes her bold declaration that she's been in love with Kio for years but too scared to say anything even though she always hoped it would work out. She also says she's mad that Eris took all that away by being the perfect girlfriend for a nerd like Kio since she's an alien catgirl with big boobs and is super friendly, how could he possibly resist? But even after hearing some hurtful stuff, Eris's reaction is still "it's awesome that someone so cool loves Kio so much. Let's all love him together!" then she explains that poly relationships are the norm on Catia. It's a special scene to me because it was what helped compersion click in my head. But, for people without that emotional connection, it's pretty cool that they had been dropping hints to that effect throughout the show. In retrospect, another Catian even explicitly said so but it was framed as a joke. Eris was her fun, bubbly, affectionate, and supportive self even when doing so would have helped a rival get Kio in a traditional harem anime with a single winner. She got to be a better friend and partner because she didn't have to worry or feel threatened by other people encroaching on her territory. She still felt jealousy and envy at times but those are normal feelings that don't magically go away because you're poly. Yeah, the entire thing was just for fanservice but she's still one of the best poly characters I've seen in anime #TotallyNotBiased.
