@LibrarianRA I live in a house built in ‘69 and all the rooms are currently painted white. Yet, if you remove the switch or plug covers you will see that each room was originally painted mango orange, lime green, or baby blue. I am convinced that people 50+ years ago were all color blind.
@KanaMauna You wouldn't believe how many people had bright red wall-to-wall carpeting with wood paneling on the walls.

@KanaMauna What was different half a century ago is that a lot more people were a lot more positive, optimistic, and hopeful, and the bright colours of the time reflected that. Look at cars from the same period.

Since about the '80s, everything's been a lot more flat and dour, even depressing. It's easy to laugh at the past, but it was pretty neat to be there at the time. Yes, we were naïve -- every generation is, and every generation believes they're not, that THEY have it all figured out.

@wesdym

What is wild is essentially everyone moved in the same direction. Some stalled and never remodeled but no one went back towards that home design.

I have some theories but they don't seem all encompassing enough. One is that the rise of entertainment centers and home PCs and all that vividness caused people to subconsciously seek a more neutral background. Another is our post-scarcity homes are now cluttered and we try to bring order to the home with the art gallery look.
