@TolarianCollege I used to be an IP lawyer and though this is a particularly impactful case it’s just the tip of the iceberg with what the USPTO and EPO let companies get away with. You can get patents for new *processes* and even new *dosages* so if your original drug patent runs out you can patent the method of making it to extend. It’s all just a huge game to them, spending millions to squeeze a few more years of exclusivity out of every drug. And it’s only getting worse 1/2
@TolarianCollege Because the USPTO is going to change the rules to make it harder for people to get standing to challenge invalid or frivolous patents (see below). And they are known in the patent world for having a lax approach to letting patents get on the register - they examine them much less rigorously than, say, the European equivalent.
