That means we shone (shined?) a light with a specific known intensity on our detector and measured how much it actually detected.
We have to run these tests in a vacuum chamber because we use extreme ultraviolet light from hydrogen 121.6 nm, which gets absorbed by air.
Results: we were detecting about 40%, which was 2x the expected rate. Methinks we have a math error somewhere.
