Lemmy posts/comments are not really deleted? - LemmyWorld

Can someone explain to me, why, whenever you delete your comment or posts on lemmy.world, you are still able to find the comments or deleted posts using mastodon by finding the user and you can still browse through the deleted posts or comments by that person? Do they ever get deleted? And if not, what’s the point of having a delete button 😅Thanks

I read on raddler that this is actually a privacy consern, the post are not actually delete just hidden, post link raddle.me/f/lobby. And I guess there should be delays in deletion across instances anyway since it is not centralized?
Warning: Lemmy doesn't care about your privacy, everything is tracked and stored forever, even if you delete it

In terms of privacy, Lemmy isn’t worse than Reddit, or other social platforms. Anyone can make their own Lemmy instance, and anyone can buy access to the Reddit API, in terms of privacy it’s the same thing.

You can only hide posts on Lemmy, Reddit just gives you the illusions of being able to delete posts.

I think it is kinda worse. Imagine having a stalker or I’m sure there could be other use cases. You wanna delete or hide your comments/posts. On reddit you would mass delete them all and your stalker can’t find them anymore. Meanwhile on lemmy, they can search you using mastodon and see all your previous posts or comments which should be deleted. that’s concerning to me 👎🏻
Nothing is ever deleted. Just create a new unrelated username and whatever you do, don’t use your real email address for sign-up.
I do that already, well tbh I don’t care about my account personally as I’m not doing anything wrong or I don’t need to hide anything. But it is better for other people to be aware what they post on here as it’s never deleted as you say 😊
Unddit only stopped working because of the API changes, but you can probably find sites doing the same just by scraping Reddit.
