& very many words have been put onto the internet with the express purpose of explaining exactly why ultima VIII is a very, very bad video game—& also, precisely how it happened that a video game so bad was even allowed to be made.
The only actual objectively bad thing, though, is really just that jumping mechanic; almost all other criticism was/is, more generally, the variously unmet expectations from (what had been) the pre-establish player base.
& those expectations were probably not unwarranted?
but nevertheless, if you were, let's say, a v edgy & somewhat isolated child who had almost narily ever played a video game on personal computer & then you were met with the intro video for ultima VIII? Well, it was all over for you & you were almost certainly locked into having An Unpopular Opinion About A Video Game for the rest of your life.
anyway. thinking I might replay ultima VIII because in the year of our lord 2023 it is one of the few games that will run on macOS 10.15 Catalina or above.
this is both a joke & also not a joke
🚨 ScummVM lets you change keymappings 🚨
The Avatar can now jump using spacebar like a normal person
the beginning of the game really is just a rapid-shot system of delivery for the types of things an edgy kid in their early teens would find compelling: drug use, meta humor—of course the aforementioned giant, glowing red pentagram—& a somewhat graphic state sponsored execution in the form of a beheading, performed by a blonde woman wearing fetish gear.
Whether or not it was intentional (& it probably was not), I was, in fact, the target audience for this game.
one thing that never really appealed to me at the time, though, was the Avatar himself. Nowadays I am able to feel nostalgia toward this haplessly violent, yellow-haired man—but only because I’m already aware of everything that awaits those on whom his desperate & feverish gaze rests.
but this is the sort of thing that can only be acquired through the passage of time, if it is even ever to be acquired at all
I found it better to lower the subtitle speed in the game settings to “50” (an argument could be made for just dropping it to “0”) & to change movement to wasd; it’s like a completely different game! (not really but the controls are much better!)
&
I have named my Avatar, "Tommy Gunn”; a couple days ago I finished rewatching the first five rocky movies (with the idea that I might finally watch Rocky Balboa from the year 2006) & the Avatar literally just looks like Tommy Gunn so
I, II, V, IV & III
(those last two are lateral)
edit: for the best to worst rating if watching with a group of people:
reverse the list
I forgot to activate the recall pad before leaving Tenebrae & had to walk all the way back from the plateau; good thing I’ve got that jumping patch installed!
#ScummVM doesn’t run the game as flawlessly as #DOSbox. Sometimes the game crashes if a book is open for too long (so, just save before reading), there have been occasional draw issues, & there's been some minor npc weirdness; but being able to play the game while using a trackpad is worth the tradeoff atm
The catacombs have been really rough in ScummVM; the level’s not great to begin with (it’s catacombs! in a video game!) but despite my natural tendency to be goaded forward by any & all aggravation, the throwing puzzle in the middle of the pilgrimage might...actually be impossible to do in this engine.
rest assured, dear reader, that I have tried.
I could cheat my way through the door—the real aim here, past the throwing puzzle—but I…would honestly rather not?
I’m going to have to reassess my options here (but I have a sinking sensation that if I pick this game up again I'll be back to using a wireless mouse)
I'm already going into withdrawal; it was really nice having a game to command tab over to while working on whatever.
might just install sim city 2000 for the time being...
man they fuckin don’t make menus like this anymore do they
so, each numbered button plays a video of Will Wright talking briefly about Sim City 2000; I watched all four videos but listening to Will Wright speak about game design apparently sends me into a fugue state and I remember nothing except that there’s some off-brand-looking kaiju toy on the desk behind him in “4"
someone has kindly uploaded these to the Internet Archive:
https://archive.org/details/Will_Wright_Questions_Simcity_2000_Special_Edition
Will Wright answers questions explaining the Sims philosophy and design, from the SimCity 2000 Special Edition version of the game, accessible through it's...
Sim City 2000 isn’t doing it for me.
Right now I need a video game where my in-game identity is defined primarily by what I do or choose not to (or accidentally!) kill, and—& this is key—will also run on macOS 10.15 Catalina or above.
Wireless mouse it’ll have to be, then—but I will not game at a desk or at a table I swear to god;
I’ll have to see how it works within the restricted margins of my lap desk;
but the idea of having to use a gaming peripheral fills me with immeasurable sadness
ok I have got myself a lightweight wireless Logitech gaming mouse with next-gen RGB lighting & I have got Ultima VIII installed, patched, & running in DOSBox and now we (personal, royal) are really #gaming #LetsFuckingGo
(also I had to start over; it’s fine)
Playing the game again in a much more controlled environment has really highlighted a lot of the weird little issues ScummVM was throwing—all of which were easily overlooked when taken separately, but having been subtracted in aggregate are suddenly quite noticeable; it’s a very ambitious project, though.
But what I've got going now is a pretty good setup. I didn’t want to have to use a …gaming peripheral… but last time I used a wireless mouse was in like 2014 & this is a lot nicer. Obviously.
& I know jack shit about sound cards & things sound card adjacent, but for both sim city 2000 & ultima VIII I’ve had to switch the music settings over to some variant of Sound Blaster, away from whatever somesuch mpu variant DOSBox seems set to default on.
like, MIDI is very cool and baroque & all but it’s also got a lot of reverb & starts to give me a headache after a couple minutes.
ok, I’ve made it back to the catacombs.
I would like to take a moment to point out that while ultima VIII may be a fairly mediocre crpg (& really, more of just a cg given the lack of rp) it is an S tier inventory management game. Organizing bags & boxes within other bags & boxes & all of the items therein is definitely something one could get very normal about if they so wanted.
One could organize every container in the entire game. If They so wanted.
I have finished the catacombs & so the Avatar has concluded his pilgrimage with all that that entails; I want to believe this draws to a close the worst part of the game, but I maybe faintly remember there being other worst parts of the game that have not yet happened.
Ended up out of bounds a couple times; lost about 30 minutes after trapping myself in an ill-timed quicksave; then lost about an hour accidentally quicksaving instead of quickloading.
…that last one caused actual, physical pain.
a) F7 will now save the game to a special hotkey savegame file. This does not require the use of one of the journal entries.
WARNING! This feature can become so addictive that it becomes the sole way of saving the game. It is not wise to depend on one saved game throughout the entire Ultima VIII quest. Remember to save in your journal every time you play Ultima VIII!
b) F8 loads the hotkey savegame file.
Either way, I was rewarded for my troubles with an absolute abundance of mid-90s-tier voice acting, a macguffin, and a shitty scimitar.
Ultima VIII (like every other game of its time & so too perpetually thereafter) suffered from time & budget restraints, which led to issues especially glaring during this series of interminable levels—in addition to the standard bullshit that’s just par for the course when savescumming is elevated to legitimate game mechanic.
Now I will be off to (if memory serves) Argentrock Isle? The signposting at this point in the game is pretty bad (possibly nonexistent?) & I honestly don’t remember how to get there.
It's an isle, though, so maybe I’ll just run there…
…
…out of bounds 😎
(Edit: I cannot actually get there by running out of bounds; I will need to backtrack & perhaps speak with the good denizens of Tenebrae.)
but some of the problem here comes from replaying the game with an imperfect memory of the game, which makes it easy to incorrectly assume some things or to overlook others in ways that would be (more) unlikely if I had either never played the game at all or had played it (more) recently.
& then the rest of problem is just the game itself.
But midgame is the best part once you can figure out how to get there (I am there now); here’s a picture of my favorite #wallArt from ultima VIII
no painting in the game is a unique asset, though; someone on Morgaelin is absolutely manufacturing these things.
here, both aforementioned paintings share a similar relationship, though the smart addition of a close-in portrait of a scary purple monster face really brings together the kind of faintly #cluttercore aesthetic of this bonus room.
I went ahead & ran through the rest of Tenebrae again to look at #wallArt; the landscape-oriented blood-themed painting only shows up once more—not as often as I would have expected (but it carries with it a certain distinct tone, I suppose).
Either way, the Avatar's off to Daemon's Crag; it would be wild if this thing weren't in Daemon's Crag, of all places
first: wow, imagine my shock & disappointment as the Avatar purposefully/loudly clopped through every building in Daemon’s Crag, only to find that there was in fact not a single landscape-oriented blood-themed painting to be seen.
second: I have officially reached the part of the game where I will need to take physical notes irl to pass my in-game sorcery test 🙄 …not sure when I’m going to feel like doing that, but I'll get to it eventually I’m sure
the 5 types are Necromancy, Theurgy, Sorcery, Thaumaturgy, & Tempestry; that last one the Avatar cannot learn, but he can (& must) learn the other four, which have about them varying levels of complexity:
Theurgy is straightforward; Thaumaturgy is straightforward (though can be cost prohibitive & space-intensive); Necromancy is space-intensive and requires some note-taking; and Sorcery is a fucking nightmare—& so is also one of the more interesting systems of magic in any game.
—from a lore & gameplay perspective, not from one of practicality or fun.
out of the 35-odd spells in the game, only a small handful are actually useful & of that small handful, only a select few will ever need to be cast more than once. (edit: it should really be stressed, however, that most spells never need be cast at all.)
you learn magic in Ultima VIII to learn it—& that is (mostly) it.
(anyway, the Avatar has passed his test & has become an Acolyte; but the tests have only just begun!)
I typed up my sorcery notes over the weekend—obviously unnecessary!—but yeah; I have my typewriter plugged in.
finally entering the final stretch of the game and I'll probably be finishing it at some point… I don’t remember how annoying the end of the game is (which is a pretty good sign, I think, that it's not super annoying).
okay, finished #ultimaVIII; it was alright
woke this morning thinking about the blood painting from Ultima VIII. I would have in a different era (my facsimile era) already have charted this out & reproduced it but then is not now & it's of absolutely no testament to any current project that my mind keeps wandering to stupid shit like this.
but also maybe the scary purple monster face with glowing yellow eyes? why not them all?
I could probably just grid these all out just to get this out of my system (like with FAQs).
like maybe something like this.
pastel chalk is best for dark paper but I hate using that garbage so I tried some gel pen, some colored pencil, and some crayon here. those all rest a little heavy on the page so I partially dithered the design to maybe add some breathing room; not sure how I feel about that decision & I'll probably try a different tact for the scary purple monster face.
but (& this is big) I've finally used that piece of black paper that's been sitting on a shelf since 2019.
