damn, it's obvious how much ao3 has become the central place for fanfic to take place when we experience a day like this, with the archive fully down for hours and then only erratically up. I haven't read a single word of fanfic all day, and I don't remember the last time that's been true!
@soph_sol which makes it all the more important they fix their shit (not about the ddos attack but other stuff).... and i know that's easier said that done, but it's become such a central part of en fandom
@soph_sol @geraineon AO3 has been so integral in keeping old fan archives alive but at the same time active fandom archives should try and decentralize again but... Fandom (see Southeast Asia, China) is actually a highly vulnerable place to state right-wing action (while of course other places it's just vulnerable to right wing action like today, period). That makes decentralization both more urgent but also riskier. (Certainly can't quite use the fedi general strategy of flying under the radar for a while, imo)
@betterloxed @soph_sol yeah... I think I've read that some people had been talking about using AO3 codebase to create another archive but afaik that hasn't quite gone anywhere yet. Do you know of any efforts like that atm?
@geraineon @betterloxed I have heard some promising talk! which is very exciting to me. more than one archive option would be a benefit to fandom
@soph_sol @geraineon esp if stuff like wp getting federated etc, maybe central repository would have a different definition soon
