This is such an on-point review of #Threads from Fast Company.

"How can I see what’s the latest in the world when the only thing I can read through is a Cobb salad of random thoughts lost in the fabric of spacetime?"

I couldn't wait to get off of Threads after just one minute. It felt like someone rebooted the social media universe and every worn out trope, tired meme, and pointless piece of engagement porn from the past three years came blaring off the screen at the same time when the universe came back online.

It was vertigo inducing. It made me question the judgement of anyone who was there putting in obvious effort to carve out a corner for themselves on such an on brand half-baked Meta platform. Really? You actually want some of this??

It felt like one of those old Internet chat rooms that didn't limit the number of people who could be in chat at the same time and there were thousands of people trying to talk at the same time.

@sysop408 I was cautiously optimistic but had to deactivate my account and delete it within 10 minutes. It was an unfinished cesspool of wannabe-celebrities attention-seeking and rage-bating.
@sysop408 despite having an Instagram account (mostly for toy and game photos haha) I'm definitely not trying Threads, it sounds and looks awful from you and several others - why would I want brands and crap yelling at me with no feed of people I follow? Yuck. What an awful design decision. Are they planning on changing that? Just like they're planning on federation... Lots of plans and crap, they clearly just threw it out there
@sysop408 It's interesting how people have polarized opinions about Threads. This camp feels sensory overload just being there. While others are having a blast. It's definitely inundated by brands and influencers. But the algorithmic feed quickly figures out what you want to see. My experience has been somewhat fun. But I can understand people not wanting to put in effort to make the platform appealing to them.

@fourjuaneight I think part of my issue with the overwhelming feeling of #Threads is there is something off about the UI.

I don't think it's just an algorithmic thing. I didn't think what was coming at me was all that different from what I might see on Twitter, with the exception that interspersed with regular content was a lowlight reel of the greatest hits of engagement spam.

It was so Twitter-ish, but it felt like everyone had the volume cranked to 11 and their finger resting on the fast forward button.

@sysop408 For sure. The UI is so minimalistic to the point that it's user-hostile. You're thrown into the deep end with your lifeguard. Filters don't work as advertised, you can't see how people interact with your posts (other than likes), and most interactions on the platform are hidden.

It feels like trying to have a group conversation in a club. You can make it enjoyable, but you have to work hard. And that's not for everyone.

No idea how they're gonna integrate with ActivityPub.

@sysop408 @fourjuaneight I took a look at it, it showed me a " People you may know / want to follow" element that was "Ellen Degeneres, Kardashian #1, Kardashian #2, Kardashian #3" LOL! It's just a repackaged Instagram. No thanks!
