Social media timeline feed:
- Someone you follow and are interested in
- Someone you follow and are interested in
- Someone you follow and are interested in

Social media algorithmic feed:
- Celebrity post from someone you've never even heard of and don't care about
- BRAND POST
- Post from random idiot you've never even heard of
- BRAND POST
- Post from celebrity you despise
- BRAND POST

@lauren

Something I didnโ€™t notice was so annoying until I came here was THE ADVERTISEMENTS.

You tune them out on Twitter a lot, but going back on my momโ€™s Twitter feed was like โ€œugh, another oneโ€ constantly.

And Facebook is a nightmare:
- friend post
- suggested post
- advertisement
- video suggestions
- group you may like
- friend post
Repeat

@JasonPerseus @lauren not sure whatโ€™s the point of following people if youโ€™re not going to see their posts ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
@lauren this is because they want you to waste your time on the platform and view more posts.

@lauren Love the algorithmic feed, but a more realistic social media feed, fediverse edition, for me would be:

- Someone you follow and are interested in
- Something interesting from some unknown using a hashtag you follow
- Something totally irrelevant from some unknown using a hashtag you follow
- Someone you follow and are interested in
- Something weird someone you follow and are interested in boosted
- Something interesting from some unknown using a hashtag you follow
etc.

@jorgecandeias @lauren

I know it's been said before, but that's literally just @lisamelton here on Fedi.

Practically my entire feed is borne of clicking on neat stuff she's boosted :)

@GuerillaGrue @jorgecandeias @lauren Thank you so much and I'm glad you like the curation! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’–
@lisamelton @GuerillaGrue @jorgecandeias @lauren you're amazing! Following you has definitely made Mastodon significantly more addictive
@Emilyy @GuerillaGrue @jorgecandeias @lauren Thank you so much! Now I suppose I need to get you to a clinic for detox. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’–
@lisamelton @Emilyy @GuerillaGrue @jorgecandeias @lauren I sometimes feel like Iโ€™m overdosing on your feed, and have to mute you for an hourโ€ฆ (but only for an hour).

@maysonic @Emilyy @GuerillaGrue @jorgecandeias @lauren That's quite all right! Seriously, your sanity is more important than my vanity. ๐Ÿ’–

You can also just hide my boosts by going to my profile and clicking on the "..." menu near my name and selecting "Hide boosts." Then you can add me to a List where you can still see them but they won't be in your timeline.

@lisamelton @maysonic @GuerillaGrue @jorgecandeias @lauren ugh! Generous with her time AND an expert Mastodon configurer!! ๐Ÿ˜ป
@Emilyy @maysonic @GuerillaGrue @jorgecandeias @lauren Awwww, thank you! I just like to help people connect. ๐Ÿ’–
@lauren It feels like Threads is getting worse for non-follows in my feed, not better.
@lauren ...and don't forget the repititions of all those random and celebrity posts when at the same time you lose the posts from people you follow when you go to find them again.๐Ÿ˜
@lauren #enshitification for capitalist profits makes billionaires go around the world in private jets
@lauren well, in the first instance there are also "boosts of really annoying people from someone you follow and are interested in." But even then it's a much better feed.
@cherold Too many boosts like that and the booster vanishes from my follow list.
@lauren You can turn off boosts from people you follow so I usually do that. The tough part is separating the occasionally-posts-something-super-annoying from the often-posts-something-super-annoying.
@lauren But without all these posts that make me angry, what am I going to get angry about?
@BenAveling The heat death of the universe.
@lauren yes. Why is it so far away? No sense of urgency. Somebody oughta get their act together on that one.

@lauren

I find it curious that many social media platforms are not permitting users to block such accounts anymore. In many cases, the feature to report them to moderators or file complaints is gone.

Captive consumers.

Plutocrats adore creating captive consumers. They work hard to force you to watch the content they monetize and are funded to force you to watch.

Remember way back when cable companies blocked TIVO because it had the ability to fast forward past advertisements?

@Npars01 Many video streaming services right now block the ability to bypass commercials. Even some of the premium pay ones!

@lauren

There's likely a smart coder out there duplicating TIIVO's fast forward feature for streaming services too. Bless 'em.

People tire of incessant monetization.

@lauren left twitter years ago because of this, even before the musk buy out lol.
@quanxi On Twitter it wasn't a problem if you stayed on the chronological timeline, which I did. Tweetdeck was even better, and that has been my primary usage (until now) for many years.
