Downloading an audiobook that I paid for, I am using Duck Duck Go's new tracker trapper to watch in real time as Kobo uses Google to try, more than once per second, to detect ... something. Duck Duck Go says Google is "known to detect" everything from headphone status to gender

Let me just buy a damn book

Post edited to reflect that this is Kobo's fault, and that I don't know exactly what it's trying to detect.

@runkefer @guacamayan librivox.org is a nice project too, run by volunteers. Only catch: it's about old books from the public domain, so mostly classics.

@mlliarm @runkefer I do like it. The downloads are sort of primitive — just MP3, so it's hard to listen to them at higher speeds. But yes I'm a fan and have been meaning to contribute content there. I love reading aloud so much that I do it on this podcast https://rss.com/podcasts/thereddeyelatam/

Another good place is https://audiobookstore.com/ They don't use the Amazon pricing model with credits and stuff. You just buy the books and get DRM free files to download. I haven't had any issues with them in the past
