Not sure, it could be both.
Or the card trying to send those SSID broadcast frames.
Ofc the chain has been cut thanks to the IF SAW being removed, so it just cuts the receive for a moment.
This was a quick experiment of "Hey, these are super old 802.11b cards, I bet they are superhet, lets build a downconverter!"-style of radio club evening project.
