I so often see this presented as "choosing what others see" when it's not just about that. It's about choosing how many/which kind of people are coming onto this platform and interacting with us.
The article Ernest posted mentions a "firehose". It's totally okay if instance admins don't want to deal with the strain that puts on servers, moderation etc.
It is an open secret that the Lemmy developers are tankies and support fascism.
They even reserved the ".ml" Mali domain because they wanted to reflect the websites original "Marxist-Leninist" intent.
They established lemmygrad.ml as their alternative server because lemmy.ml was being groomed to replace reddit by outside influences (i.e. completely random people from the internet making accounts and posting content that had no idea what lemmy's history was).
