Thoughts? 🐧
@itsfoss sure! Not only Edubuntu but other distros too! As an educator I believe we can teach about freedom and the FOSS culture by giving the students the means to know the world of the free and open source software.
@itsfoss Well it would certainly give the kids more valuable and marketable skills than they'd get with Windows. It'd also give them a life skill that would save them a ton of money throughout their lives 👍

@itsfoss

I'd say go as far as to develop a methodology around the most prominent Linux distros and let students pick whatever.

@itsfoss There's also Debian Skolelinux Blend!
@[email protected] @itsfoss zorin os education is also another good option, the zorin eco-system has some nice tools like kolibri, veyon, zorin grid
@itsfoss Yes! It'd definitely be a better solution than Chromebooks, which always have to be online, and Windows/Mac laptops, which are costly. The only thing stopping Edubuntu, really, is that schools, which barely (if ever) prioritize tech literacy, will naturally knell over to the Big-tech overlords which seem trustworthy but offer worse services.
@itsfoss I think it would be a good idea, but it might not prepare them for a workplace that uses Microsoft. I think it would be great if we got rid of Microsoft in the workplace for the most part, but I sadly think we need some level of microsoft education in the classroom. Maybe one that a student can test out of it they use windows at home.
@itsfoss
It's a great concept, but it cannot just be "to replace Windows", it needs to be shown how it is the best tool for education, and needs to include the tools, training and support that the educators, IT, and school admins need to provide the best education experience. Show them how it integrates with their current tools, and how it is secure and easy to manage.
@itsfoss TBH, I never heard about this distro, I just visited it official website but they didn't mention details of it main features 🤷🏻‍♂️, can anyone tell me what this distro offers?
Still Alive! Edubuntu is back From the Dead With Version 23.04 Release

Edubuntu makes a comeback as a modern distro for Education.

It's FOSS News
@itsfoss Absolutely! Not just because Gnu/Linux Distributions are free compared to Windows -which is expensive- but also because they help students learn programming in a much easier way than Windows.
Not to mention the painfully slow machines that schools have -I remeber that we had an old computer that took five minutes to boot into Windows 98 - and Linux being a much faster and lightweight system.
@itsfoss yeah. It’s a no-brainer that a system like that which exposes you to more technical stuff and is custom built for that purpose will be better.
@itsfoss Yes . All government schools in our state is already using an ubuntu based distro and It's have been a great success .
@itsfoss >> my child is already using Fedora 38 as their daily driver at school. The school laptop with Windows 10 was so locked down it was useless. The issue is help desk support and, unfortunately, restriction of the content and scope of the machines.
@itsfoss Edubuntu wouldn't be my first choice but I do strongly believe schools should teach students about Linux as an alternative to Windows.
@itsfoss Yes, definitely. Windows is making the future generations stupider.
@itsfoss zorin do an educational version i think and has software for managing labs of workstations

@itsfoss

There are solutions which also cover the backend needs of school administration, class management and e-learning / examination.

وهنا راح تظهر أهمية البرمجيات الحرة
بصناعة حلول مخصصة وفعالة ومتوافرة للمشاركة والتعديل للقاعدة واسعة من الناس.
@itsfoss schools shouldn’t rely on closed source platfroms at all and should teach about alternatives. I’m glad my school taught me how to use @libreoffice, but on the other hand I’ve seen so many people pay for Microsoft Office just beacuse they think there’s no other alternative.
People use Windows just because shops only sell windows laptop and because it’s the only OS they know about.
@itsfoss I think they should use Linux just for the reason that Windows costs money alone, since they're paying for that with our taxes
