Mastodon can be so weird. My feeds are filled with lots of posts complaining about how and why people are doing mastodon wrong, how they should post, why they should change their server, shaming people for forgetting to add text to an image, calling people who haven’t deleted their twitter accounts Nazis, now followed by posts ripping on people trying Threads….all followed by posts wondering why people don’t seem to enjoy Mastodon as much as they think they should. I just can’t imagine why 🙄

@DrPsyBuffy

Mastodon is the preachy vegan of social media networks.

@sharoz @DrPsyBuffy

threads isn't even available in the EU. mastodon is a EU (german) offspring of the fediverse. It's mainly a linux community project.

it's in part about ethics, concepts ..
like democracy you know ..

(and yes, we don't want to become "like you", become colonized ..)

:)

@jesuisatire @sharoz @DrPsyBuffy I think we found one of the preachy vegans

@vinzen

Not even vegan .. living from love and air for over a decade now ..
:)

(Interesting about @DrPsyBuffy toot in any case is the how. How to addres newbees, Explain particularities without being rude. It's interesting how "thin skinned" people are when it comes to written text and I wonder to what extent people are acustomed to rude bad intent communicaction from somewhere else)

@sharoz

@vinzen

I guess this has something to do with your "different/weird" experience in the fediVerse @DrPsyBuffy ..

While it's nearly a tired cliche at this point that fedi runs on trans people and furries, under it all is something unsaid. A lot of marginalized people keep this place going, not to make money, but to create a space for people like themselves. Social media hits different when those running the network are in the community, rather than extracting *from* that community for their own ends.

@jesuisatire @DrPsyBuffy @sharoz oh don’t get me wrong I thoroughly enjoy Mastodon after years of looking at social media and feeling nothing. But I don’t see how shaming other people or screaming how BETTER this place is compared to whatever else creates a good environment. That’s why I thought the vocal vegan comparison was on point.

@vinzen

👍

> how shaming other people or screaming

That's what I'm trying to figure out.
To what extent does this exist, is this a perception, does this refer to a few "bad actors"?
You need just one or a few profiles to create this perception in a stream of one hashtag or one big instance for example to create that perception.
