It scales very very badly and doesn't really remove the risk implied by having middlemen... It actually makes that worse because these small actors are more likely to go away

I'm not sure I agree. In the worst case, a federated model would "degenerate" into a completely decentralized model where no one trusts each other and everyone ends up "federating for themselves", no?

I do see an issue though with the current implementation of AP servers that couple identity with content distribution. It would be very nice to be able to, e.g, use my ENS as my identity so that I could move between instances freely.

@raphael I think the fail mod is in fact lots of small servers that don't federate. Kind of what we're going for with threads vs. Mastodon vs. Blusky vs. Nostr vs Lens vs twitter vs Farcaster... A pretty sad state.
