50M signups in the first day really puts all the other social network startups in perspective, huh
@stroughtonsmith I wonder how much the iOS app store preordering helps.
@stroughtonsmith It helps that IG has over 500M DAUs and FB has over 2B. Twitter has under 300M users and most of those accounts are either abandoned or very inactive.
@stroughtonsmith people are still talking about Bluesky but I don’t understand how it could ever scale effectively to compete with what Meta has done in the past 24 hours, and with very few hiccups as far as I can tell
@Kevin @stroughtonsmith Yeah, having access to the Instagram social graph is an enormous boost, as is the simple set-up. Even for someone who’s pretty ideologically hostile to Facebook, such as myself, it was pretty impressive that all your Instagram mutuals appear instantly to follow etc. That's a major advantage!
@donmacdonald @stroughtonsmith I don’t use Facebook or Insta and I was just complimenting Meta heavily to my wife, because it’s honestly fucking impressive
@stroughtonsmith Or, it shows how many people were already on Instagram?
@stroughtonsmith What’s the total Instagram user base right now? Could be interesting to see how many Instagram users DIDN’T sign up for Threads. Hard to compare Instagram numbers with Twitter numbers in my mind. No different than comparing a Ford Escape with a Chevy Camaro. They’re both cars I guess.
@stroughtonsmith they sort of cheated by leveraging the instagram user base, it would be interesting to see what its like after a couple of weeks.
@stroughtonsmith He started with over 2B people.

@stroughtonsmith when you are starting with over 2 billion users, 50 mil doesn't seem as impressive.

Just like a billionaire spending 100,000 dollars doesn't mean much...

@stroughtonsmith If you’re on Instagram it’s one button to sign up and it brings over your profile and followers.
@stroughtonsmith Really does. Insta integration helps a lot, but so does the fact that Threads has gotten day one support from major influencers, celebrities, journalists, brands, news outlets (both national, local and special interest), and politicians. Threads launched at the perfect moment to properly capitalize on Twitter's decline. Fingers crossed Zuck and Co. don't back out on the promised ActivityPub/Federation support.
@stroughtonsmith does it? It’s just an extension to Instagram with 2 billion users. 50m is nothing really.
