Japan is preparing to dump about 1.3 million tonnes of contaminated water into the Pacific over the next three to four decades. It claims this would be made safe through an Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) and then dilution, but the water will still be radioactive. The dump of contaminated water is part of the effort to decommission the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, 12 years after it was overwhelmed by a tsunami. International laws are clear that States cannot undertake...

@nickofnz , signed, though I wonder if it'll still make a lot of difference. From what I heard, there was already contaminated seawater after the disaster arriving at the coast of Canada.

This is counterfactual fearmongering, nothing else. This is drinking water for all intents and purposes, you can swim in it.

An expert on BBC just said the release is not safe, and, logically, tritium will be concentrated up the food chain as pollutants always do.

He suggested a great solution - use the contaminated water in the concrete required for the #Fukushima plant sea walls and other structures. He estimated the water would be consumed in 5 years as opposed to 30 in the release.

With a 12.5 yr half life, #radiation from tritium isolated in concrete from the #biosphere for 50 years would be 6%.
