Daring Fireball
@daringfireball @gruber neat and all but most people can’t use the service

@daringfireball Aren’t they still in Invite Only (while Threads is at 30M+ users?

I think Bluesky lost already. Threads is gonna be where everyone goes.

And Zuck beat Jack twice on this (as he also has $1B invested in Twitter).

@daringfireball one of these days I’ll get an invite code and try it. Also proper way to monetize a service and get away from just ads.
@daringfireball That is sweet! Changed mine now. Thanks for the writeup, @gruber.

@daringfireball Well damn - we could get accounts there…. Or we could build something in that vein but better and free or supporting the instances we love…

I know which one sounds better to me.

@daringfireball
OTOH, if they had settled on HTTP URI w microformats instead of DNS TXT (a la IndieAuth), there is no need for a BM.
@tchambers
@daringfireball Bluesky is really dropping the ball on timing. It’s been prime time the last few months, and it feels like momentum will be even harder with Threads in the mix.
@daringfireball I like the custom domain concept but prefer the email style model — doesn’t [email protected] seem more natural than jon.gruber.foo? It’s like they are more concerned with selling new domains than setting it up right.
@aaronbuckner @daringfireball I might be wrong here but you can’t verify name at sever exists without interaction from an outside system. Usually with a human clicking a link in an email. You can however verify name.server exist with a simple ping.

@drfloyd5 @daringfireball

It's just at TXT record to map to the username -- maybe it's just my preference to see user@domain instead of user.domain.

Would definitely like to see some other Bluesky instances pop up so we know the username isn't really going to be like [email protected] though.

@daringfireball Sure would like to try it. Seems with Threads amassing 30 million users, now would be a good time for Bluesky to open the doors to the rest of us.
@daringfireball Cool…now I just need an invite! :)

While not exactly analogous - but not altogether too dissimilar - like you can do with ActivityPub, and bringing your own domain to Micro.blog.
