Users Join Threads in Droves

Last night, by the time I called it quits and went to bed Threads, Meta’s new social network, had hit 2 million users in 2 hours. As I write this, Meta’s Adam Mosseri says the count has now surpassed 10 million in 7 hours, which exceeds Mastodon’s user base. Currently, Threads is a pretty barebones

@macstories I think it's important to qualify this: nobody on Instagram actually needed to "join" Threads. The users came baked in. This isn't to diminish the apps initial success but the circumstances are much different than, say, Mastodon where people had to create brand new accounts.
@macstories do people really want to give meta even more of their data?
@RemeJuan @macstories It cannot be overstated how many people genuinely don’t know. Facebook’s continued existence is largely owed to ignorance on a global scale.

@dreamwinder and they where so upset when Apple started putting data collection on the App Store, if everyone actually read it they’d have a grand total of zero downloads.

WTF does it need health data.

@RemeJuan You might as well ask people to read the EULA.

We need privacy legislation so fucking badly…

@dreamwinder I’d not even read that, but like it’s a nice user friendly list. 🤣 it even ends with “other”
@RemeJuan That’s my point. Extra reading should never be required. Privacy should be the default by law, not opt-out.
@macstories #ThreadsApp lasted less than half an hour for me. Now deleted and it’s ended up with my Instagram account being deactivated too.
