Backing up a 375GB archive to AWS S3. Internet don’t fail me! Disk drives on the NAS have SMART alarms. 😬
Uploading 82GB more. Mounted with only 2 of 3 disks with RAID 5. These disks lasted 4 years.
Using S3 permanently would cost me more than twice the cost of replacing the drives assuming they also last 4 years again.
That doesn't include the cost of powering the array. Bought a 5-disk bay and a replacement single-board computer, which should bring down energy consumption.
If we manage to be completely off-grid, all of the energy consumption cost can be folded into the rooftop #solar investment.
