Metas #threads connecting to the fediverse has me feeling a certain way

#Instagram holds my main community so threads felt natural for me to go towards. But I was ultimately not gonna spend much time on it

I saw it as another #Meta backed clone of another app that would fizzle and die

But knowing that it plans to connect to Mastodon for sure changes my outlook. Particularly with migrating my community here.

Still a bit of a fedi-noob but I'm curious what others see on this?

@dillonthebiologist Same. I'm not writing it off.

@CMDoran Yea I guess thats where im at now. Also with Bluesky still stuck behind invite only, Im excited to see if Threads fills the gap

Of course, with Instagrams track record its likely to be a buggy mess at launch!

@dillonthebiologist I don't have insta, but potentially could connect w family...them there and me here. Would that work? Maybe after they find that Fediverse doesn't track them or sell ads, they'd migrate?
@CMDoran I have no idea tbh. It all depends on what Meta pushes. I thiiiink it'll work tho
@dillonthebiologist in my (albeit limited experience) the biggest reason I’ll probably stay away from #threads despite my friends and family primarily communicating through #instagram is the lack of algorithm here. I absolutely love that my feed is curated purely by me. (Also no ads)

@breadlessnorseman totally feel that. It's interesting that they want to connect with fed but not go fully in the direction of algo curation. Though, knowing Meta, I wouldn't be surprised if they changed that in the future

Lord knows they love to fundamentally change their platforms based on trends

@dillonthebiologist have they said that threads won’t be algorithmically driven, or even just less so than their other apps? That seems so incredibly out of character for Meta. I totally see how they could justify federating (monetize content by users who don’t want to sign up for the app being the most obvious) but weakening the influence of the algorithm seems completely out of line with their interests.

@breadlessnorseman they haven't, and I totally agree that they are algorithm focused

But it also can't be ignored that they brought back a chronological feed after user request. Just gotta tap the IG logo and hit "Followers"

I don't have any disillusions that Meta is good in any way, but I see them as a big force that looks at market trends and adjusts

Given their limit in the EU, I can't imagine them keeping the current course long term.

There's still a lot of unknowns ofc

@dillonthebiologist gotcha, thanks for the clarification! I think we agree on views of Meta as a company. I honestly forgot about them adding back chronological timelines on Instagram, considering it can’t be a default view, I wonder how it’s affected engagement 🤔

But yeah, I agree. Definitely going to have to wait and see with regards to threads, but I have very low expectations

@breadlessnorseman optimistic skepticism probably describes me right now 😜

#Threads by #Meta forcing itself into the #Fediverse is bad and will harm the Fediverse as a whole if not straight up kill it. I am baffled to see claims such as "we should give them a chance!" or "this could help the Fediverse grow!", as if we're not talking about one of the probably most immoral, unethical, and predatory businesses in this day and age. Meta isn't coming to play fair. They're coming to use us for profit. "Embrace, extend, extinguish." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish 1/🧵 #thread

Opalium's Mastodon
@bhaug @dillonthebiologist Just boosted this myself actually, it makes some solid points. Here’s hoping we can play defensively enough to avoid ending up a lifeless husk.

@bhaug @breadlessnorseman I totally see what their saying and I dont disagree with their take of Metas motives. Though the amount of replies openly calling for slurbombing Threads (while using the slurs) makes me uneasy with the take. As well as the revelation in those replies that Mastodon literally did what they assume Meta will do, albeit with better intentions.

Meta truly is a net negative force in the world, but fighting them by using racist and homophobic slurs is just toxic imo

@dillonthebiologist @bhaug Dang, I wasn’t seeing any of the toxicity until I logged out, jfc. (Glad to be on a small, well moderated instance)

Definitely an interesting point, bringing up Mastodon’s historical influence on #activitypub. I think the profit motive behind this instance of “Embrace, Extend, Extinguish” is what makes this so much worse.

Ultimately though, all we can do is see what happens and take action where we see fit to keep a decentralized #fediverse alive.

@dillonthebiologist @bhaug maybe “worse” isn’t the right word since they obviously haven’t done anything yet, but “concerning” might be more accurate.
