Reminder: Many of the same corporations putting out July 4th tweets today also pay nothing in federal income taxes.

@rbreich NOT paying US taxes is just what SMART PEOPLE do! Also why are my roads so CRAP and why can't I buy anything with my EBT Card?

-Republicans.

@rbreich plus the messages are for advertising. Rinse and repeat.

@rbreich I think we should have an annual official leaderboard of which corporations pay the most in taxes and the top 100 or so get recognized for actually contributing to our country.

The big corporations that are conspicuously absent deserve to be shamed.

@cowvin @rbreich @rbreich IDK how true it is, but I remember hearing a story that around the turn of the last century, when income taxes started, the very wealthy would dress up and show up in person to pay them _because_ the richest paid—it was a sign of your wealth. (Things change, not always for the better—flash forward a few decades to CCR’s “but when the tax man comes to the door, the house looks like a rummage sale”.) I know, people, not corporations, but…

@Kokorami @rbreich I know what you mean! Here we are, celebrating Independence day. People are claiming to be patriotic yet they don't want to pay for any of the stuff that keeps our country running.

America needs a major cultural shift. Paying taxes is our patriotic duty and civic responsibility. People who don't pay their fair share are not patriots. They are essentially stealing from our country.

@rbreich

I’m glad you say these things. They are all so true.

@rbreich true, but also let’s not forget that taxes don’t fund federal spending.
@rbreich It's just easiest and most appropriate to tap out of celebrating the highly problematic birth of this nation. People are important, not an ideal.
@rbreich All the more reason to show their love of country!!!
@rbreich Same reminder that birthers celebrating their freedom whilst denying basic and essential reproductive rights.

@rbreich

Stand on the shoulders of giants and claim you accomplished your goal alone!

@rbreich Reminds me of how the NFL makes their merchandise in China, I know it's standard for American companies to outsource labour to Chinese slums but the 'most patriotic American' company? HAH!
