Pornhub has shut off access in Mississippi and Virginia to protest age verification laws that can involve checking government IDs. It previously blocked access in Utah.

Would you want to be responsible for checking IDs over the internet? No sane company would want to be responsible for getting it wrong.

Also, would you be willing to send a scan of your drivers license to a porn website? Any website?

You could make the check with your ID card in a way that a middle ware reads the card and just gives the ok signal to the site. No personal data is transfered outside .

We use an lvl 3 smardcard reader for things like this in germany. NFC on the ID is checked, PIN entered in the reader and the middle ware verifies that you are sitting at the PC.

In the moment of request you can see what data is transfered because to use this service they have to be verified by the middle ware service as well in advance access to the process.
