Not sure if this makes me laugh or concerned.

@mjvalente #Alt4You actual image description:
A scientist in front of a complex machine explains to colleague:
"I created this device to test my theory that our entire reality is a simulation,"
She checks the printout the machine has produced.
"… but the readings I'm getting suggest something much worse."
"What?" asks the colleague.
"We're living in a cartoon!"
"Does it at least have a good punchline?"
The first scientist checks the long printout again.
"Nope."
@herzleid I guess I failed you in this, right. A much too basic image description. 😔

@mjvalente Well, yeah, sort of. 🙃 What you provided was more like meta data? It doesn't give any information about what is actually in the picture, why you posted it, why it makes you wonder whether to laugh or be concerned. So, while it is by some definition an image description, it still excludes those who cannot see or visually interpret the picture.

Good news is you can edit posts, including image descriptions, & every new pic posted is a new chance to practice image description. 🌼

@herzleid Oy! Now I feel a bit guilty. I’ll try to do better.
@mjvalente I appreciate that. 😊 ⭐
@herzleid okay. I used your image description. And acknowledged you. (And now I’m sweating with the amount of work or guilt each time I post an image!)

@mjvalente Aw, thank you. It's not supposed to be anxiety inducing. People have varying ability—some can't do image descriptions bc of their own limitations and that's OK. IDs don't have to be super detailed either. A little is better than nothing.

You can follow @PleaseCaption to get a reminder if you forget, & if you can't do it in the moment, acknowledging that in the post (eg "travelling, will add description later") or asking for help (some use # Alt4Me for this) goes a long way too.

@herzleid

This is very cool. Thank you for the explanation and advice. And I’ll try not to stress… much. (But, I do like a good challenge.)

@mjvalente You're welcome. :) As evidenced, I rather enjoy writing IDs. And thinking about "why am I posting this?" sometimes leads to unexpected but interesting answers.

@herzleid I bet it will do the same for me (re: the thinking).

Alas, for some reason I’m not able to follow the @pleasecaption account.
